Lafayette Howell
Lafayette Howell is the Founder and Chief Innovation Officer whose job is to figure out ways to create massive scale to address the execution and implementation issues that prevents sustainable turnaround, for over 5,000 low-performing schools and districts in the United States. He is an energizer, mind-bender, strategic doer, and executive catalyst for what is possible to advance strategies in a down to earth way. When asked how to describe his job, he responds with two halves: “one-half of my job is to help the most overburdened district leaders actually get things done, complete, finished so they can focus on the core issues of improving academic performance and student success.” The other half is “to create opportunities for execution-minded people to do some of the most interesting, dynamic, challenging and gratifying work an individual can expect to do”. | Career Highlights: | Substitute teacher for Nashville Public Schools, KPMG Consulting, Social Policy & Systems practice, Director of Strategic Planning at Fireman’s Fund Commercial Insurance, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, worked with Education Start-Up during dotcom boom, MJLM LLP conducting management performance reviews of school districts nationally, worked on first management turnaround of public school system at St. Louis Public Schools in 2003 with Alvarez & Marsal. Engaged by Houston Community College (3rd largest community college system) since 2004 to assist with their strategic planning and execution. In 2007-08 served as program manager of Harmony Health acquisition by Universal American. Currently leading low-performing districts with high schools that are experiencing unacceptable state for consecutive years. |
| Personal Stuff: | Married to beautiful, environmental advocate, Tanhya, who keeps me grounded and proud father of two rambunctious boys, Edward and Alex. Former distance runner who ran in two consecutive Hood to Coast relays. Cool places I have lived include Portland, Seattle, Tiburon (just outside San Francisco), San Diego, and Houston. My favorite city remains Portland. |
